Introduction

At Stag Lane Primary School we strongly believe that by studying the arts we are able to inspire and motivate pupils, as well as foster their self-esteem.  Children’s general academic and social achievements can be greatly enhanced through using the arts as a tool for teaching and learning.  We believe that the skills gained in the arts help our children understand that they can improve and achieve in other consequential activities.

Part of our vision for Stag Lane Primary is to promote the children’s creativity and imagination and to reflect the rich and diverse cultural backgrounds of our pupils and staff.  We are committed to providing such opportunities with visual art, music, drama, dance and creative writing, thereby enhancing all aspects of the school curriculum.

Art Intent

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-‐quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils. Their developing knowledge, skills and understanding will equip them to confidently experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design; they will also be given the tools to develop and build confidence in self-expression through art and design. As pupils become artists and designers, they will be taught to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.  Through cross-curricular work, pupils will learn that art and design reflect and shape our history, as well as contribute to the culture, creativity and wellbeing of our nation.

Creative learning environment

We actively work to provide an environment that will enable our children to reach their true potential within and through the arts.  To do this we take account of the emotional and physical environment, realising that the enthusiasm of adults working with the children is as important as the space and resources with which they are working.

Aims

At Stag Lane Primary School we aim to provide all pupils with:

  • The opportunity to participate in and experience a broad and balanced range of art forms.
  • The opportunity to creatively express themselves in and through all art forms.
  • The opportunity to develop a progressive range of skills and vocabulary relating specific art forms.
  • A range of arts activities that develop their social skills, confidence and self-esteem.
  • Arts activities that access other areas of the curriculum and different cultures.
  • Opportunities to foster and develop individual interests in the arts.

Curriculum Provision

Our curriculum reflects the importance we place on the arts at Stag Lane Primary School.  All classes have timetabled sessions to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum.  In addition, our focus on developing a Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic curriculum ensures an element of arts teaching in everything we do.

We offer a range of arts clubs that are available to all pupils, including, choir, dance, drama and a wide variety of musical instrument tuition.

Equal Opportunities and Special Educational Needs

Stag Lane is committed to promoting and developing equality of opportunity through all of its art forms. We will endeavor to be open, accessible and supportive and aim for maximum access for every child by removing all barriers which may prevent children from expressing themselves.

We believe that equal opportunities are about access and allowing creativity through any means of expression. Through monitoring our activities and continuously developing our physical and emotional environment in which we work, we will also endeavor to develop practices which will ensure equality of experience and equality of outcome within the arts.

At Stag Lane we strive to ensure that all children and employees are able to express their creative skills in many different forms enabling everyone to celebrate their achievements through the diversity of the arts.
